Château de Rochemorin Red 2023

Presentation

Presentation
Château de Rochemorin belonged to the great philosopher and writer Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, in the 18th century. Among other famous works, he was the author of the "Persian Letters". Montesquieu was a fine ambassador for the red wines of Rochemorin among his friends, acquaintances and the notables he met during his trips throughout Europe, never forgetting to praise the beautiful complexity and mineral characteristics of his wine, so typical of the Graves terroir. Its beautiful aromatic expression, accompanied by a well-balanced and elegant palate make this one of the most reliable wines in the appellation, while remaining very affordable.
The vintage
2023 was marked by a uniform start to vegetation: bud-break dates returned to normal, foliage developed rapidly and the bunches emerged beautifully. Heavy rainfall in the spring tarnished the start of the season somewhat, with mildew appearing in places. There was no hot summer in 2023, but relatively cool nights and warm but not excessively hot days in July and August created ideal ripening conditions for the grapes, which produced remarkable aromatic potential.

Tasting
A deep red colour with a vibrant glow.
The intense, expressive nose opens with a bouquet of ripe red and black fruit, dominated by blackberry. Subtle woody notes, toasty and perfectly blended, enrich the whole.
On the palate, the attack is supple and slightly sweet, with good volume and a sensation of roundness in the middle. The well-integrated tannins ensure a silky, persistent finish. The aromatic complexity of the nose is repeated, with a fine balance between bright fruit and delicate oak.
Food pairings
Pork fillet mignon with mushrooms, rack of lamb in a herb crust, polenta gratin with roasted vegetables and parmesan cheese, veggie burger with mushrooms and mature Comté cheese.

"Quite spicy and peppery from the Petit Verdot, almost all of which was used in the final blend. Quite substantial and very authentically Pessac. Fresh and lifted and with charcuterie rather than gamey notes, with a red and darker berry fruit and a little plum skin. The acidity is well distributed like the tannins over the palate. Chiselled with quite a tight and narrow frame, densely charged. More limpid than de Cruzeau. There’s a nice sapid juiciness on the finish, with little ripples of freshness alternating with the grip of the tannins producing a pulsating effect. Very good for a Merlot-dominated Pessac in 2023. The sustained improvement of recent vintages continues. (Tasting en Primeur)
